I had planned on taking two non-consecutive weeks off from SOTW in order to focus on the Iliad and the Odyssey, but we only ended up taking one week off for the Odyssey. We read the Iliad while doing other SOTW chapters on Ancient Greece.
The epics are included in chapters 19 and 20.
We read the Iliad section of Iliad and the Odyssey by Marcia Williams and The Wooden Horse of Troy by John Malam. I debated also reading Black Ships Before Troy: The Story of the Iliad by Rosemary Sutcliff, but decided against it. Mainly because we’re still plugging through The Railway Children, and I didn’t want to have two longer, denser books in progress at the same time.

I had initially planned on focusing solely on the Odyssey, but decided to continue on with SOTW in conjunction. We’re already pushing late June for finishing it and I really don’t want to have one of big subjects still lingering in July.
I decided to go with Tales from the Odyssey Part 1 and Part 2 by Mary Pope Osborne. Bean enjoys the Magic Tree House series, so I assumed she would like this version of the Odyssey as well (same author). We also read the Odyssey section of Marcia Williams’ book shown above.
Other possible choices were The Adventures of Odysseus by Hugh Lupton, The Odyssey by Robin Lister, and The Wanderings of Odysseus: The Story of the Odyssey by Rosemary Sutcliff.
